Young drummers 'have to study Ringo Starr's style'

Posted by Helen Whitten

Individuals looking to make it in the drumming world have to learn how to play like Ringo Starr, one expert has claimed.

Rich Pagano, drummer and co-vocalist for The Fab Faux, a Beatles tribute act, told Music Radar aspiring drummers can learn how to "establish a song's groove" by listening to Starr.

"He never went overboard. Everything he did was tasteful and for the most part minimal. To put it succinctly, he didn't just play drums, he played songs," Pagano observed.

The expert has some advice for individuals looking to make their drum playing sound like Starr's from 1968 onwards - tape tea towels, dishrags and sheets to their kits.

In order to help drummers who want to emulate the performer, Pagano has created a video lesson that takes people through what they need to do to get Starr's sound.

Born Richard Starkey, Starr was one of the first drummers to gain popularity on an equal footing to the rest of a band.
