Unsigned band attracts global interest after online competition

A band getting started in the music industry has won a competition to be promoted around the world.

Norwich indie rock act Red Leaf was one of 50 bands competing to secure the most downloads of one of their tracks from music site Reverb Nation.

Their song December Nights finished top of the charts in the competition, meaning their music will be forwarded to around 300,000 fans via social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, reports Norwich Evening News.

Lead singer James Barr said the competition had been a useful tool for the competing unsigned bands getting started in the music business.

He added that he was delighted that Red Leaf had topped the charts.

"We just did it to get the music out to more people," he said.

"It's worked out really well and we've probably got hundreds of new fans just from this week alone."

This comes after former Pipettes singer Rose Elinor Dougall told BBC 6 Music that aspiring musicians would benefit from stepping out of their comfort zone by working on different projects.
