Study gig footage to improve performances

Musicians often record their shows so they can put songs on YouTube or release a live CD, but live recordings can prove valuable for other reasons.

As a document of your show from start to finish, they give you a unique opportunity to see it from the audience's point of view.

Therefore, it is worth recording as many shows as you can in order to get an insight into what the paying punter sees.

This can help you analyse various aspects of the show in a more objective way, such as what the crowd responds to most strongly and whether you are actively engaging with your audience.

A recording can also highlight those areas where musically you need to improve and work a little harder, as well as those moments that produce a little bit of magic.

By dissecting what you are doing in this way, you can step back and look at what works and what doesn't.

Hopefully, you can filter out the not-so-good bits and work on refining those winning parts of your gig.

And don't forget, these recordings may be invaluable years down the line, either as a personal memento of your early days in the band or as a historical document of how a star was born.
