Rush guitar player discusses 'out of control' solo

Rush guitar player Alex Lifeson has discussed how he wanted the solo in a new tune to sound "out of control".

The veteran electric guitar group are due to release a new album next year and Lifeson gave MusicRadar a sneak preview of what fans can expect.

Brought Up To Believe, one of the tracks slated for inclusion, has a "screaming guitar presence" which is used to punctuate the solo section of the song.

Another new song, Caravan, also contains a trademark prog rock solo, of which Lifeson commented: "It's all over the map, kind of frenetic and climbing up and down with what the rest of the track was doing."

Guitar solos are often used to end - or even begin - songs by rock and prog groups, but their inclusion can divide opinion among listeners.

While playing an extended and complicated solo can show off a guitarist's technical proficiency, it can begin to sound boring if allowed to continue for too long.

Solos can be a great way to improvise during gigs or jamming sessions - but think carefully about who is enjoying them the most before getting busy on the fretboard.
