PRS aims to get more women in music

A special event designed to address why women are a relative minority in the music industry is to be staged next month.
PRS for Music hopes the debate at Kings Place in London on May 24th 2010 will shine the spotlight on why men outnumber women so significantly.
According to figures from the group, female music creators and songwriters are outnumbered six to one in the music industry.
Vanessa Reed, co-director of PRS for Music Foundation, commented: "We need to work across the creative industries so that we can understand the barriers and to raise awareness of the current status quo."
This, she said, would help women to "maximise their creative talent" and flourish in the various arts.
PRS for Music, which has joined forces with Bird's Eye View for the campaign, has appointed female music journalist Miranda Sawyer to chair the event.
However, the recent emergence of acts such as Ellie Goulding, Florence and the Machine and Pixie Lott suggests the music industry could be turning a corner, as female singer-songwriters are increasingly becoming hot properties.
