Musicians 'should not be shy about their emotions when writing songs'

Musicians should not be shy about pouring out their emotions when writing new songs.

This is the view of New York guitarist Joe Satriani, who answered questions from fans on the Music Radar website.

Correspondent John DeSalvo asked the star how he immerses himself "in the creative zone" when sitting down to write the words for his CDs.

Satriani said that great songs can be produced when musicians are honest about their feelings and manage to turn them into a piece of art.

He commented: "If you find yourself sitting down and you're writing about something sad, you have to allow yourself to have the courage to let it all out."

The guitar virtuoso also discussed what musicians should do when they do not feel inspired to pick up their instrument.

Flexing their creative muscles in other ways, such as drawing or playing the piano, could be the best thing to do in this situation, he concluded.

Last month, Rolling Stones and Faces member Ronnie Wood told the Daily Mail that rookie guitarists could gain inspiration from legendary players such as Chuck Berry and Blind Willie McTell.
