Music fans drawn to YouTube

Musicians could find YouTube a great promotional tool, as it is proving to be very popular with music fans.

According to research from Sysomos, nearly a third of all videos viewed on the website are music-related.

Music was found to be the most popular category overall, accounting for 30.7 per cent of all views, while entertainment came second at 14.6 per cent.

This put it far ahead of categories such as news and sport, which managed 6.7 per cent and six per cent respectively.

The study also found that 20 to 35-year-olds are the most likely to embed and link to YouTube music videos on other sites, such as blogs or social networking site profiles.

As a result, artists could benefit considerably from ensuring they have official material posted on YouTube.

U2 have been among the big names to embrace the promotional opportunities it offers, as they recently streamed a full gig live on the website free of charge.
