Music 'can help improve literacy and numeracy'

Posted by Jamie Franklin
Music education needs to be a part of a successful and balanced curriculum, one expert had claimed.
Paul McManus, chief executive officer of the Music Industries Association, noted the pastime helps children to improve their numeracy and literacy.
He was speaking after education minister Michael Gove revealed £82.5 million will be given towards music education by the government.
"It is extremely encouraging to read the continuing supportive comments ... concerning the importance of music education for a child and the wide-ranging benefits it brings to a child's development," Mr McManus observed.
He added the requirement to maintain the statutory entitlement for a child to learn a musical instrument as set out in the Henley Review is good news.
The specialist observed his organisation is ready to help students get access to quality products.
Mr Gove noted he is hoping to attract more top music graduates into the profession by using Teach First, a scheme that sees exceptional candidates placed in challenging schools.
