How to stand out in a music competition

Musicians who want to go on to greater things often end up competing in Battle of the Bands contests. So how can you make sure you stand out from rival performers?
Perhaps the best way to make a good impression is to consider the criteria judges will be basing their opinions upon.
This will vary in every competition, but it is a safe bet to assume they will be looking for something unique and individual, both in the songs and in your presentation.
Stagecraft can also go a long way in attracting votes. Interacting with the audience, engaging with punters throughout each song and being able to respond to their actions are the signs of a winning live act.
After all, concert-goers often want sheer entertainment more than musical virtuosity.
However, your technical competence will still be under the microscope.
Judges will look to spot whether you have rehearsed sufficiently, planned your set to make the most of your allotted slot and chosen songs that build up a sense of momentum during the gig.
You must be professional, entertaining and competent all at the same time. So don't fall down on any one of these areas if you wish to be rated highly.
