How to make the most of your music lessons

Aspiring musicians who want to learn the guitar or piano often underestimate how hard they must work.
Signing up for lessons and partaking in an hour-long tutorial each week simply won't be enough to help you get proficient.
You should aim to practise in your own time so you come back to your next lesson having made demonstrable progress.
Only then can your teacher decide whether you are able to tackle more advanced pieces.
But what happens if you are practising long and hard yet seem to be hitting a brick wall?
This isn't uncommon and it is at this point you should remember what teachers are for.
Don't feel uncomfortable about asking for help and support, as sharing tips and shortcuts is part of their job.
Sheer embarrassment and private frustration can stop learners seeking help, but this is counterproductive.
A teacher cannot support you as well as they could do otherwise if you don't raise certain issues that need addressing.
Help them to help you and the results should soon be apparent.
