How to hold a guitar properly

When you've bought your first guitar, you then need to go about learning to play the instrument.
However, before you get even this far, you have to make sure your guitar is positioned properly.
After all, you could develop bad habits and even give yourself a bad back if you don't have it correctly placed.
So make sure the back of the guitar is placed against your chest or stomach, while the neck runs parallel to the floor.
This still applies even if you're playing when sat down, in which case the body of the guitar will also be rested on one of your legs.
Your ideal guitar position, such as how high you want it to be slung around your neck, is entirely your choice, but if you start off like this, you can't go wrong.
However, it does depend partly on whether you are left or right-handed.
A right-handed guitarist will have the headstock pointing to their left, so they can work the fretboard with their left hand and strum or pluck with their right.
Left-handed guitar players, such as Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix, would do the reverse and have their headstocks pointing in the other direction.
