How to get the best out of interviews with the media

Although many musicians would probably prefer to focus on what they do best - writing and performing songs - speaking to the media is an essential part of band promotion.
For large groups this means appearing on chat shows or agreeing to cover interviews with magazines such as the NME - which are usually arranged by costly PR agents.
However, smaller groups can also turn the media to their advantage to drum up publicity for their demos or concerts.
Local newspapers, websites and fanzines are a good place to start, so it is worth sending them your demo and a short press release about upcoming gigs.
Of course, it could work the other way and your band could be approached after a successful show or after your demo has generated interest.
During interviews, the key is to offer as much information as possible about the group while also sparking the interest of the journalist with quirky or memorable soundbites.
Tales of unusual gigs or unlikely influences are likely to make good copy - and give your band valuable column inches.
