How to fire children's interest in learning a musical instrument

Whether you are seven or 70, learning to play a musical instrument such as the guitar or piano is usually most difficult in the early stages.
So when it comes to keeping children interested, perseverance and keeping things fresh is the key.
Perhaps the worst thing a parent can do is to force a child to learn a particular instrument against their will - they may attend the lessons, but are unlikely to carry on once these stop.
Therefore, it is a good idea to let the youngster choose the instrument they wish to learn and give them all the tools they need to succeed.
Lessons are essential in the very early stages of learning to play, as is practising as often as possible.
Encouraging a child in a gentle way is often the best way forward - this can include helping them to find bands, attending concerts or recitals and offering comforting words when particular pieces are proving difficult.
Every child has the ability to learn an instrument - and it is a parent or guardian's job to ensure they have all the tools and help they need to do so.
