How to cope with aches and pains on stage and in the studio

Musicians often have to adopt highly repetitive motions or sit and stand in fairly unnatural positions for a long time.

This can leave many open to aches and pains and potentially conditions such as repetitive strain injury.

However, there are steps an artist can take to either prevent these problems from occurring or manage any little niggles they have.

A musician's stance and posture is crucial, regardless of whether they are playing an instrument such as the piano sat down or are stood up with a guitar.

So check that all your equipment and accessories are well positioned and ergonomically sound.

It could be worth seeking professional advice if you cannot find a position that allows you to play your instrument without feeling the effects later.

One good option favoured by many musicians, especially drummers, is carrying out a set of warm-up and cool-down exercises before and after the gig.

Wearing harnesses and straps if you are already nursing an injury may also be wise, as you don't want to exacerbate a problem.

Look after yourself, plan ahead and don't ignore or try to play through any discomfort.
