How to capture a winning vocal performance

When you are making songs on a home recording studio, it can be easy to forget the importance of ensuring your vocal sounds right.

So much time is devoted to setting up your instruments that the vocal track can be something of an afterthought - usually to its detriment.

However, musicians can take steps to get their voice sounding as good as it possibly can during the recording process.

One idea favoured by some is adding the vocals some time after the backing track has been recorded.

This means singers can be familiar and confident with the music they are singing with, which can go a long way towards enhancing their performance.

Adopting this method also means you don't have to spend too long practising during the session itself.

If your mics and faders are set up properly, you should hopefully be able to walk in and get your vocal down in one or two takes.

Overdoing a vocal can lead to an artist getting bored and putting less emotion into their performance, or even worse, damaging their voice.

The vocals are something that every listener will pay attention to, so it is worth treating them with maximum care.
