Hank Marvin: Basca recognises talent not fame

The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (Basca) has been commended for recognising those who work behind the scenes in the music industry.

Hank Marvin, guitarist with The Shadows, was among those to receive an honour at Basca's annual Gold Badge awards, an event designed to honour people such as producers, arrangers and those who work in music promotion.

Speaking to the Guardian, Marvin said being honoured by Basca is particularly important to him.

"It's very flattering to win an award from your peers who you hope recognise talent rather than fame," he commented.

Marvin, who made his name with hits such as Apache, FBI and The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt, has recently been taking part in the Cliff Richard and The Shadows reunion tour, as the band is marking 50 years in the music business.

Singer Aled Jones was also among those to be handed an award by Basca, along with songwriters Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, and Richard Manners of Warner/Chappell Music.
