Get the perfect vocal sound on your home recordings

When you are laying down tracks on a home recording studio, you can't afford to neglect the sound of the vocals.
You can spend so long refining the tone of all your instruments that it's easy to overlook this subject - despite the voice being one of the most prominent parts of the song.
But whereas musical instruments can often be set at a fairly constant volume, the nature of the human voice means it can go to tonal extremes, thereby making it difficult to capture on record.
Use a dynamic mic to capture a vocal performance, as it can cope with the sound fluctuations without distorting.
And consider where you stand in relation to the mic. You will have a hard time getting a balanced recording if you keep moving around.
If you remain stationary, stand a reasonable distance away from the mic, possibly about four inches.
Standing too close can cause the sound to distort, while standing too far away leads to your voice sounding distant.
Finally, think about where you plan to position your mic. You don't want your mic to be picking up sound waves bouncing off the walls.
Experiment with different set-ups if you plan to keep recording in the same room, and you'll find the one that suits you and your music best.
