Don't overproduce songwriter demos

Songwriters who want to submit their compositions to a music publisher tend to put their tracks down on a home recording studio and then send off a demo.

But some can be rejected even if they are technically perfect tracks with highly proficient performances throughout.

Why? Because technical perfection isn't necessarily a sign of a hit song.

Music publishers want something that is commercially viable for one of their artists that could potentially be a big success.

They do not want to know how much of a production wizard you are in front of a mixing desk.

Besides, huge productions on songwriter demos can be something of a hindrance, as they distract from exactly what it is you want to showcase.

Keep your recordings simple, with sparse instrumentation and a natural, organic sound.

The words and the melody should speak for themselves and make the music publisher sit up and take notice.
