Don't fall for urban myths about piano lessons

You may have heard a lot of things about piano lessons that have put you off signing up, but it's worth saying a lot of these are simply not true.

For instance, some students go in with a sense of fear, because they worry their teacher will give up on them if they make any mistakes.

But making mistakes is all part of the learning process and most teachers would be concerned if all they saw was note-perfect performances.

After all, how can they give you guidance and support if you have everything nailed already?

The fear of messing up can do more harm than good in lessons, so don't be afraid about going wrong in front of your tutor.

Others are put off lessons because they believe they must devote time to practising every day of the week.

But having about three days of a week away from your piano is not a bad thing. An athlete can't train every day, so why should it be different for a musician?

Teachers should not be intimidating and imposing figures, so staying relaxed yet focused will help you make the most of your lessons.
