Does the order in which I mix instruments make a difference?

Musicians who are putting down a track on a home recording studio don't follow a strict template.

If you compare songs by different artists across a number of genres, this becomes readily apparent, especially when you think about how they have been mixed.

During the mixing process, you have the chance to let certain instruments and vocal parts ring out.

So the order in which you mix every track does make a profound difference to the resulting song.

It depends partly on what aspects you want to bring to the fore, the style of the track and the message you want to convey.

For example, an artist who wants to showcase their vocals will build the track around this and ensure it is placed prominently in the mix.

Meanwhile, a rock or dance track might benefit from being built around the rhythm section.

So go for the most important tracks first, when it sounds clear and unfettered by what are essentially adornments and not major priorities.

Start with the key elements and only add everything else once you have got the main tracks right.
