DIY music labels 'have enjoyed success in 2010'

A number of artist-run labels have experienced success in 2010, it has been claimed.
Ben Cardew, writing for Music Week, observed there is a rise in the trend for performers to put their own songs out.
This is an option that may appeal to some aspiring musicians, as it means they will have greater creative control over their album than they may get at a major record company.
The writer remarked the advent of the internet has made this process much easier, as singers can now connect with their fan base "outside of the traditional record label structures".
PIAS managing director Peter Thompson said: "The owner of the rights is the artist and if they can offset the costs of marketing against the broad range of revenue streams then this can make a lot more sense."
Mr Cardew noted one of the biggest success stories was Dizzee Rascal, whose label Dirtee Stank achieved 15th place in the 2010 album market.
