Change your approach when playing piano in a band

The piano is very versatile and expressive, which makes it an excellent solo instrument.
But if you play in an ensemble, you may realise that you need to change your playing style slightly.
This is particularly true for rock pianists, as the piano will probably be there to fill out the sound rather than dominate it.
Therefore, it can be wise not to overplay your instrument.
Anyone who is in a band can make the mistake of trying a bit too hard and adding too many flourishes.
It can be counterproductive in rock music especially - if there is a perfectly good bass player in the band, why should a piano player come up with a complicated bass part as well?
This is not to say that elaborate arrangements are wrong. Simply put, the instruments in a band should complement rather than compete with each other.
So consider what roles are being fulfilled by your bandmates and work to enhance them, rather than take over from them.
