Meet Adele’s rhythm section – and hear their stadium-filling Roland hybrid drum setups

Session work doesn’t get any bigger than this. Last month, Roland bagged an Access All Areas pass for Adele’s Manchester Arena shows, and met the crack US rhythm section tasked with recreating the hits from her 17-million-selling third album, 25. Now, in this exclusive video interview, percussionist Aaron Draper and drummer Derrick Wright walk us through their hybrid setups, and explain how Roland gear helps them nail the quirks of the studio originals. “Today’s music is evolving,” says Derrick. “You gotta be a chameleon.”

If you want to discover how sampling and triggering is used at the highest level, take a few tips from the pros as they introduce their unique approach to live beats. You’ll learn how Aaron uses the Roland SPD-SX and KT-10 to trigger samples (including the original studio sub kick from mega-hit Hello), plus how he performs sampled timpani on Chasing Pavements using the Roland Handsonic HPD-20. You’ll also find out how Derrick uses the SPD-SX to organise setlists, start songs and supercharge his acoustic kick drum for a boom that fills the biggest stadium. As he tells us: “I use it for basically everything. It’s an amazing piece of gear…”
