Become a synthesizer master with Roland’s workshops at Planet Synth and get an exlcusive Exploring Sound iBook for free.
Have you ever wondered how to recreate the gurgling squelch of Daft Punk’s Da Funk or the haunting staccato of Kraftwerk’s The Model? Well wonder no more! Roland is hosting a series of synthesizer masterclasses at Planet Synth stores, exposing the tricks of the trade and teaching synth aficionados how to recreate classic sounds from 15 genre-defining songs.
The workshops take place from 15–22 September at Planet Synth stores all over the UK – and everyone is welcome. Whether you’re in the market for a new synth or you’ve already got a studio full of tech at home, this is the perfect opportunity to get under the hood of some top Roland synthesizers and learn how to make a diverse collection of the best synth sounds ever.
We’ll be using three Roland Synthesizers: the GAIA SH-01, the Jupiter 50 and the Jupiter 80, and showing you how these three synths have the scope to create just about every synth sound imaginable.
The 15 sounds we’ll be making range from iconic ‘80s lead (Europe – The Final Countdown) to serious dubstep bass (Skrillex – Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites). We’ll also hit a few important touchstones in between.
What’s more, our experts will be on hand to answer your questions so you can leave with a solid knowledge of synthesis and sound creation. In addition to this we will give each of those who attend an exclusive Exploring Sound iBook, a series of lessons in the science of sound with hints and tips showing you how to get the best out of your hardware or soft synthesizer.
There’s no industry qualification in making cool sounds – but these workshops are definitely the next best thing.
The following Planet stores will be hosting the Planet Synth event… All you need to do is pick a couple of these fantastic tunes and contact your local Roland Planet to arrange a 1-2-1 demonstration on building the sounds from scratch. Oh, and be sure to ask about the free Exploring Sound iBook!’
Download our 15 Iconic Synth Sounds patch for free – just save it to a USB stick and load it to your Giai synth (for Giai’s only).

Hi, are there any plans for a workshop in Sheffield? I’m going to struggle to get to any of these cities but the workshop sounds great!
Hi Andy
At the moment the workshops are only available in the areas where our specialist stores and stockists are. I can say that the feedback we have from the workshops is always positive, so if you can possibly make it across to one, then its worthwhile.
Make sure to also keep coming back to our blog as we will be releasing more posts about Synths and the rest of our product range.
Thanks
Thanks Russell, I wondered if you were planning a second wave what with you having a Planet Roland site in Sheffield. I’ll try to get to Leeds or Manchester if I can.
Hi Andy
All the feedback has been great so far, we will look to do another, but as of the moment, cant say when.
Thanks
I thought they would be good. Sadly I couldn’t get over to Leeds or Manchester in the end. Hopefully you will do some more sessions in other stores that carry your gear. Is there any chance you will be sharing the ebook that accompanied the sessions for those of us who couldn’t make it?
How come there’s nothing at PMT in Norwich??
Hi Kit
We couldn’t manage to fulfill Norwich this time around, which is a shame. But will look to include in more promotions as we go on.
Cheers
Hi – the numnber for the Brighton session comes up as un recognised; Brighton GAK 07500 186043 Craig Fenner

Looks great ! I live in Vancouver Canada, do you happen to know if Roland Canada might offer a similar workshop in the future? I love the selection of tunes you have chosen and I would like to learn how to re-create these sounds on my Roland Gaia SH-01. Cheers! Geoff Peters
My blog – http://geoffmobile.com
Hey Geoff
Not sure if Canada Roland will have it on their radar, but I will pass on your message to them and let them know that we have had some great feedback from fans and hope its something they use for you guys out there. I am just going to check on something with our product managers here, but will see if we can get you a patch of the 15 synth sounds and send over..
Cheers
Just added the synth patch via a zip file above, please feel free to download, share the link for this on Facebook, Twitter or email… hope you enjoy people!
Wow, I just tried out these patches on my Gaia. There are a lot more than 15 patches there! And there are some really amazing ones too! Thanks so much for making these available, I will enjoy studying them and learning more about synthesis. I plan on doing a video explaining how these sounds are created sometime in the future as well. Cheers! Geoff
Thank you very much for this great set of patches. I’ve put a link on http://www.gaiausers.com, I’m sure they’ll be much appreciated. Mog
Thanks Mog, hope you enjoy
unzipped the file. Contains a bin and a svd file which don’t load on my JP80 (used the import function). What am I doing wrong?
Hi there
you need to make sure that the file is added to the root of your USB stick for it to load.
thanks
Hi Roland Team,
I made my first tutorial video / blog about these wonderful sounds you have made available. My tutorial video is available on my blog at:
http://geoffmobile.com/blog/roland-gaia-classic-synth-sounds-part-1-tutorial-vlog-by-geoffmobile-sept-27-2012
Please let me know what you think! I am looking forward to making more videos about more of these sounds on my Gaia.
Cheers!
Geoff Peters
Hi Roland Team and synth fans,
Part 2 of my tutorial video is now online at:
http://geoffmobile.com/blog/roland-gaia-classic-synth-sounds-part-2-how-to-modify-your-own-sounds-tutorial-by-geoffmobile
I show how to modify some of the patches provided by Roland in this blog post and further Gaia experimentations.
Cheers!
Geoff
The file is “empty” on my JP80. I see I missed the part `(for Giai’s only)`. Do you happen to have the files available in JP80/50 format? I would love to work with the sounds!
Hello Roland team,
I have downloaded the patches above onto my gaia but I have discovered there are 64 patches and I am struggling to find the patches that correspond with the songs in the article, and so was wondering whether you have any advice to give to me in finding these? I am mostly looking for the scary monsters and kids patches.
Many Thanks,
Jack
Hey Jack
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, the best thing to do would be to login to http://www.roland.co.uk/myroland and ask our amazing tech guys from there who can talk you through it.

Russell
