If you’re off to a festival this summer, there’s a very good chance that many of the drummers on the bill will be using electronic drums as part of their acoustic drum kit. Although fairly common in breakbeat and dubstep circles (where the drummer needs to incorporate electronic sounds into their performance), the trend has now spread further afield with many mainstream rock and pop acts now using acoustic triggers to recreate their recorded sound in a live environment.
Craig Blundell, acclaimed producer and clinician for Roland V-Drums, Premier Drums and Paiste cymbals, is at the forefront of the hybrid movement, having spent many years working with both acoustic and electronic drums. In thisvideo, Craig showcases the possibilities of hybrid drum kits by using the Roland OCTAPAD SPD-30 percussion module, triggered from his Premier drum kit via Roland’s RT acoustic triggers; RT-10K for the kick, RT-10S for the snare and RT-10T for the toms.
Craig shows how easily the RT triggers can connect to your acoustic drums, before showing how the OCTAPAD and SPD-SX Sampling Pad can be used to electrify your drumming.
