Ellie Goulding’s musical director Joe Clegg on breaking rules with Roland’s SPD-SX

If you saw Ellie Goulding’s Delirium World Tour as it hit Britain last month, you’d have been struck by how the live sound caught the vibe of last year’s acclaimed album. For that, credit goes to drummer and musical director, Joe Clegg, who made it his mission to nail every nuance of Delirium – then give it added rocket fuel. “I want to be faithful to the sounds on the record,” he tells us in this exclusive video interview from Liverpool’s Echo Arena. “It’s my job to replicate that, but also to add something new.”

Joe’s hybrid kit features plenty of Roland gear, including five Roland PD-8 trigger pads, twin triggers on his acoustic snare for dynamic layered sounds, and the KT-10 Kick Trigger Pedal that sees action on “nearly every song”. At the heart of his setup, meanwhile, is Roland’s SPD-SX Sampling Pad: a unit he tells us “runs the whole show”. Watch now to discover just how effective the SPD-SX can be in a live scenario, with Joe demonstrating how he uses it to start songs, trigger samples and as a MIDI controller. “Ellie’s record is very electronic,” he explains, “but I really want the two worlds to live together…”
